Chapter Eight

Though the first words anyone had spoken after Penny and I had announced we’d be moving to the Bahamas had been, “I’m going to stow away in your suitcase,” no one had come to visit us. I didn’t blame them; time seemed to move so much faster once we arrived, and before we’d had time to properly settle in, we were moving, again. We were ten weeks away from leaving when Penny’s best friend, and former roommate, Rosa, got some unexpected time off.

It was something to do with bedbugs. I didn’t ask for any details, aside from assurances that they wouldn’t travel down with her.

In the days before Rosa arrived for her impromptu visit, Penny went into some kind of cleaning frenzy. She kept things fairly tidy already, and I’d gotten much better about my own annoying housekeeping habits, so there wasn’t much left to do. Penny found whatever she could, however. On the morning of Rosa’s arrival, Penny was on her hands and knees in our shower, frantically scrubbing the grout.

Though I’d been cruelly banished to the downstairs bathroom for my morning ablutions, I’d refused to tote all of my shaving things down there. I watched Penny over my shoulder in the mirror as she steered a toothbrush around the edges of the tiles. “You’ll probably be so busy showing her around that she won’t have a chance to inspect the grout.”

“I know,” she said, a wee bit testy. “It’s not just Rosa coming. I’m nesting, and since there’s nothing to really prepare for here, cleaning is my only outlet. Have you figured out a moving date, yet?”

I frowned at a spot I’d missed on my cheek and went over it, again, with the razor. “Not yet, no. Just working out some last details.”

Last details like putting my foot down with Carrie, politely but firmly, as I would with any client who was being too pushy. She was still trying to negotiate with me about Panama; I hadn’t closed off the idea completely, but her insistence that I supervise the entire project on site held me back. I’d promised Penny we wouldn’t move, again. I wouldn’t go back on my word.

Penny groaned as she stood, a hand at the small of her back. It shouldn’t have been attractive to me and she would very likely murder me if I expressed my opinion on the subject, but the more her shape changed, the more I wanted her. I’d never considered pregnancy particularly sexy; carrying a baby was just something some women did, and I’d never found it to be a turn-on or a turn-off. Maybe because she was the love of my life, carrying my children, she’d triggered something primal in my brain. The new roundness of her—from her face where that one precious dimple had deepened to her breasts which, while lovely enough before, had become reminiscent of Jane Russell’s bust in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes—drove me wild.

She, however, was not as enthusiastic.

Leaning on the counter beside me, she met my gaze in the mirror.
